Why is my age estimation not working? How it works and what to do next

Why did my age estimation check fail?

Incode is the service we use to check that you are aged 18 or over before you can view age-restricted photos on Vivastreet.

The check starts with a selfie taken on your phone. If the selfie alone cannot confirm your age, Incode will ask you to scan an identity document.

2. How do I check my age?

Before you start, have your phone ready and keep your passport or identity card nearby in case you need it. You’ll need to complete the check within 15 minutes.

Start on Vivastreet

Select the age-check banner, confirm that you are 18 or over, and select Verify Now for Full Access.

Continue on your phone

If you’re on a computer, scan the QR code with your phone’s camera and open the link. Keep the Vivastreet page open on your computer.

If you’re already on your phone, continue on that device.

Review the consent information

Read the information shown by Incode, including the terms and privacy information, and confirm your agreement to continue.

Take your selfie

Allow access to your camera if asked, then follow the instructions on screen. Make sure your face is clearly visible and that you are the only person in the frame.

Scan your ID if asked

A selfie may be enough. If Incode needs an identity document, select the available document type and follow the instructions to scan it.

Check your result on Vivastreet

If you completed everything on your phone, you should return to Vivastreet automatically. If you started on a computer, return to the Vivastreet page you left open.

When your check passes, Vivastreet shows Age Check Successful, and age-restricted photos become visible.

3. Which phone or browser should I use?

Complete the check on your phone using:

  • Safari on an iPhone.

  • Google Chrome on an Android phone.

Open the check directly in one of these browsers, rather than inside an email or social media app. Allow camera access when prompted.

You cannot complete the check using a computer webcam. If you start on a computer, scan the QR code to continue on your phone.

4. Can I choose another language?

Incode supports several languages. You can choose from the available options at the start of your check.

5. Why am I being asked for ID after taking a selfie?

Sometimes a selfie alone is not enough to confirm your age. Incode may then ask you to scan an identity document.

Being asked for ID does not mean you have failed the check. It is the next step in confirming that you are 18 or over.

Use your own document, as Incode compares the photo on it with your selfie.

6. Which identity documents can I use?

When asked for ID, choose Identity Card or Passport from the options shown on screen.

Use a valid document and follow the capture instructions. Supported documents vary by issuing country. You can consult Incode’s document list for country-specific information, then use the options available in your check.

7. My selfie is not working. What can I do?

Try these steps:

  • Find good lighting.

  • Remove your hat and glasses.

  • Position your face inside the guide shown on screen.

  • Make sure nobody else, and no photos of faces, are visible in the frame.

Follow the on-screen instructions and check how many attempts remain. You have up to three selfie attempts.

If Incode then asks for an identity document, continue with that step.

8. My identity document will not scan. What should I do?

Make sure your document is clear and easy to read:

  • Use good, even lighting.

  • Avoid glare and shadows.

  • Hold the document steady. If using a passport, lay it flat.

  • Keep the whole requested page or side inside the on-screen guide.

  • Keep your fingers away from the photo and document details.

Follow any instructions shown on screen. If you have attempts remaining, try again.

9. The check timed out. How do I start again?

The check times out after 15 minutes.

Return to Vivastreet and select Verify Now to start again. Have your phone and identity document ready so you can complete the steps in one go.

10. Incode said “Thank you”, but the photos are still blurred. Why?

The Thank you message means you have finished the steps. Your age-check result appears on Vivastreet.

Return to the Vivastreet page where you started:

  • Age Check Successful means your check passed.

  • If the completed check returns you to Age Check Required with limited access, your check did not pass and age-restricted photos remain blurred.

If you started on a computer and used your phone for the check, look for the result on your computer.

11. I have no attempts left and my check did not pass. What happens now?

If your check did not pass, age-restricted photos will stay blurred. The result screen offers an option to continue browsing with limited access.

Our support team cannot reset your attempts or change the result of an age check.

12. Can I send my ID to customer support instead?

Please do not send your identity document or selfie by chat or email.

Our support team cannot verify your age using documents sent directly to us. Complete the check through Incode on your phone.

I’m an advertiser. Do I need to complete an Incode check?

Identity verification for advertisers continues to use Yoti.

If you have already completed your Yoti identity check, you do not need to complete a separate Incode age check. Log in to your verified advertiser account so Vivastreet can recognise your verification.
